Practical Protection Podcast: Reinsurance
Hi everyone. I hope you enjoyed the previous episode? I focused on the Armed Forces and how this can impact the terms you’re offered when it comes to protection insurance.

For the newest episode of the podcast, I am speaking with Tim Smith, head of protection at Hannover Re. We are talking about reinsurance and how it mixes with the wider insurance sector.
Many people don’t know what a reinsurer is, never mind what they actually do. I think that there are probably quite a few people who don’t understand how reinsurers and insurers work, both from within our industry and outside of it too. Quite often I explain it to clients and I’ve yet to meet one who knew about this interplay already.
A reinsurer plays a crucial role within the insurance industry, as they insure the insurers. This means that they hold a lot of the risk. If it wasn’t for reinsurers, insurers wouldn’t be able to insure as many people or offer the valuable protection many of us need. Reinsurers also set underwriting manuals for the insurers to then build upon and use to assess applications.

Next time Matt Rann will be joining me and will be talking about getting insurance when you have schizophrenia.
