Practical Protection Podcast: Declined income protection
Hi everyone. Matt Rann joined me for the last episode of the Practical Protection Podcast, where we discussed testicular cancer. If you haven’t listened already, head over to our website to catch up.

This week I am once again joined by Matt, for a slightly unusual episode of the podcast. Since my early teens, I have been diagnosed with a number of health conditions, all of which I’m quite open about.
For this episode, I talk about my health conditions and Matt explains how an insurer might assess each of these in relation to applying for income protection. We discuss why these have meant that I have been declined personal income protection from all insurers.
Something to think about is that most income protection claims are related to the back or mental health, and this is taken into account when underwriters make their decisions.
For people in similar situations, group insurance can be a great option as there is often less underwriting (through our website you can catch up on a previous episode where we discussed group insurance).
Listen to the episode here: https://practical-protection.co.uk/declined-income-protection/.
Next time I have Roy McLoughlin back with me and we are talking to Catherine Betley from Grief Chat. The episode will focus upon the need for clear access to trained counsellors to help people if they or a loved one have needed to make an insurance claim.
If you’re listening to this as part of your work, you can claim a CPD certificate. These are now accredited by CPD UK, through our sponsor Octo Members.
Once you have listened to the episode, you can claim your certificate at https://practical-protection.co.uk/claim-your-cpd/.
You may find that your work systems are not keen on the CPD form (it’s a Google form). Please don’t worry if that is the case. Contact me on social media or through the website and I will be able to issue the certificate directly to you.
